Applying for an International Driving Permit (IDP) is straightforward for Canadians, but it helps to have a few documents and details ready before you start. Here’s what you’ll need.

A Valid Canadian Driver’s Licence

Your International Driving Permit is based on the details of your current, valid driver’s licence issued by your province or territory, so you’ll need to upload a clear photo or scan of it during the application. Make sure your licence isn’t expired and that all four corners and the printed details are visible and legible in your upload.

Personal Details

You’ll be asked to provide your full name, date of birth, and province or territory of residence exactly as they appear on your driver’s licence. Double-checking these details against your licence before submitting helps avoid delays.

A Passport-Style Photo

You’ll need a recent photo of yourself, facing the camera directly, without a hat or sunglasses, and with a plain background if possible. This photo will appear on your IDP, so a clear, well-lit image works best.

Your Signature

The application form includes a signature field where you can sign using your mouse on a desktop computer or your finger on a mobile device or tablet. This signature will appear on your Digital IDP and ID card.

Shipping Details (If Ordering a Printed Copy)

If you’ve chosen a print-and-digital package, you’ll need to provide a billing address and a shipping address where your printed booklet and ID card can be delivered — anywhere in Canada or abroad. Multiple delivery speed options are available, with prices shown in CAD.

A Few Tips Before You Start

  • Make sure your driver’s licence will remain valid for the duration of your trip — an expired licence can affect the validity of your IDP.
